The fact of the matter is that the 'real world' is to a large extent unconsciously built upon the language habits of the group (Sapir 1958, p.69). This weeks lecture was based on Stories of Place: Story Lines. For this weeks key concept is specifically focused on 'communication' within the virtual social network. The quality of language and pictures that are used to evoke a sense of space and place within the virtual social network. A meme consist of a caption/image. The picture itself has to have a meaning and relates to the caption. The transitions in Communication Technology derived from orality (spoken word), to manuscripts, to print, to electronic (LearnJCU 2017, S.9).
For this weeks key concept of communication, I have chosen memes as a form of communication in regards to the language and pictures used to evoke a sense of space and place in the virtual social network. On Facebook, Memes has been used as a form of communication of how a person feels, thinks, a way of expressing, or plain old banter. To have a better understanding of memes, in the dictionary, it is defined as an element of a culture or system of behaviour passed from one individual to another by imitation or other non-genetic means.
The language used in memes on Facebook is centred on sense of humour, whether it is positive or dark humour. Memes can be translated in multiple different languages to suit the culture of the meme origin. (i.e meme created in Brazil, the language would most likely be in Portuguese. Whereas a meme created in Australia would be in written in English). Every meme evokes a sense of space due to the fact that it forms an attachment of home, culture, or system of behaviour. Memes then evoke into a place, which is affected by the sense of time. This is because every year, new memes are created with new pictures used to relate to the caption that is attached. This relates to another blog based on Facebook and memes. The author, Nicole Clarke states that, From what I've seen memes are a funny picture or cartoon accompanied by a caption that relates to the picture. They can be about anything and everything. This can be viewed on sites.psu.edu.
What begins as undifferentiated
space becomes place as we get to know it better and endow it
with value (Tuan Y 1977, p.6, 2, 2). As mentioned, this context relates on each individual person or a group of people with the same sense of humour. The amount of space of the meme then becomes a place of value. Meaning if the person knows where the image came from, then the caption would be relevant, otherwise the meme would be meaningless to those whom do not know the origin of the image. Facebook has been used to share and post memes as it can reach everywhere in the world. This is because everyone is connected through this virtual social network.
